Old Town of Beijing Broad, vigorous, expansive, magnificent.
Those scenes of luxurious performances in Chinese civilization.
You can’t see, behind the stage, brilliance remains.
Old city of Shanghai.
Intimate, mellow, hazy, cryptic.
Those episodes of real legends in Chinese history.
You can see, beauties lost forever, talent remains.

Trace of Those Past Years
Beijing and Shanghai in 1930s, how we are going to know that time? To me, I capture the mood from world of films. I have visual expression in films lead my imagination when seeing Shanghai in 1930s, Leslie Chan and Gong Li were acting, brought me nostalgic scenes. If I have to indicate Beijing and Shanghai with colors, then red stands for Beijing and for Shanghai, it is sepia color. I feel like so by nature, no need to search reasons.

I experienced taking a tumble, which hasn’t occurred to me for a long time, when I saw works by Pan Xiaoxiao and Wang Zhanxin. Old city of Shanghai in Pan Xiaoxiao’s works and those elegant, talented women, actresses or writers, make me think of spring coat and hat in one scene of <Lust Caution>, the scene which actor and actress entering jewel store. Maybe these are all kind of hint to let us imagine Shanghai in 1930s. They are all colors of love and hatred of people in that age of war. Red in Wang Zhanxin’s works is expression of massive life in northern China. World of <Raise the Red Lantern>, directed by Zhang Yimou, come across. Different dramas of life played behind the stage of Beijing Opera. Countless time and sweat is in distinctive colors, red and blue, only for that a few minutes on the stage. It’s colors different from that of Shanghai, different happiness, anger, sadness and joy. We sincerely hope that you could touch the colors of two cities in our “Feast of Talent”
