Forewords – Exit: is it safe?

It will definitely blow your mind at the first sight of Yuki MATSUEDA’s work. Is egg yolk simply being pulled out of the eggshell? No, it’s more like the egg yolk jumps out of the eggshell itself to seek freedom.

So I can’t help buying his work for the first time. Since then, from the exhibition of thirty Japanese artists, the group exhibition of three artists from China, Japan and Korea to this very first solo exhibition in Shanghai: egg karma, we have been cooperated for ten years.

When MATSUEDA was studying design at Tokyo University of the Arts, he liked to make large art installations. Focusing on every funny piece, he strived for excellence and even made packing boxes used for carrying his works exquisite just like a craftsman. He said that the inspiration of form of his artwork was from an experience of failure: once he made a large installation of plane. The plane was very cool, just like ones in boys’ dreams. Although the warhead of plane didn’t stretch out successfully, it brought me the inspiration of the work after. Aha!

The theme of this first solo exhibition in Shanghai is “Exit”. Exit series is also one of the representative works of MATSUEDA just as egg series. Usually we install emergency exits in public places for the sake of safety. People can escape quickly in dangerous situations. The translation of “emergency exit” in Japanese is “unusual exit”, which means the exit that can be used when something unusual happens. So It’s normal the expression “unusual exit” in Japanese appears in his work.

As a very busy contemporary artist, this year MATSUEDA has already displayed his works in New York in September and London Art Fair in October. There will be four more solo exhibitions, one in Shanghai in November, one in Basel Miami in December, one in Seoul in next March and one in Tokyo in next October.
